The autumnal shift, grounding, and reflections on change

Grounding Your Body during Times of Escalation

— Carly McDade, LMFT

Many of us have likely been feeling the ‘winds of change’ over the past few weeks. With the shift back to an Autumn schedule (even if school is not a part of it for you or your family), the season of Fall often brings about a scurry:

Daylight in the Northern Hemisphere is beginning to thin, with longer evenings ahead.

The leaves change color & drop in their own time (hello metaphor for letting go!).

Temperatures also drop and sweaters come out of our storage closets.

Election season (enough said).

In Ayurveda (which translates to “Science of Life” in Sanskrit), this time of year is also the season of Vata Dosha. There are said to be 3 functional energies in nature known as the ‘Doshas’ (vata, pitta, and kapha). Our bodies embody all three, and when in harmony, we may access more optimal, physiological health.

No one dosha is better than another – we need a combination of each of their core functions in order to find balance. Just like we see with Mother Nature! The doshas are also experienced in our external environment, each of them expressing their essence among various natural elements throughout the year.

Fall is represented by Vata Dosha:  wind, air, cool, dry, mobile. (Sound familiar?)

Pretty remarkable that a 5,000 year old healing system continues to offer wisdom and resources for today. Let’s keep honoring the many modes of guidance from our eastern & indigenous communities.

So how do we create room for ease during all of this commotion? Here are a few ideas to get started:

  • Slow, mindful exercises (like Yin or Restorative yoga)

  • Breathwork like Nadi Shodana (alternate nostril breathing)

  • Eating warm, nourishing foods (hello, soups & tea!)

  • Staying warm and cozy with slippers and blankets

  • Finding a sense of routine (perhaps going to bed at the same time every night)

  • Connecting intentionally with a friend (a walk or coffee)

There’s a chance some of this is already of part of your life, which is great! What might be another item to add in? Or is it better for your during this season to drop something away? Finding good balance for each of us requires attention to the moment.

Inhale, exhale.

We’re here, too.

Around the Center

There's always something unfolding at Spring Village. Over the past few weeks, we've enjoyed opportunities to gather, learn, and connect through our workshops, classes, and wellness offerings. One of the things we value most about SVC is the community that continues to grow here… practitioners sharing their gifts, familiar faces returning, and new people finding their way through our doors. We're grateful to be a place where connection, curiosity, and well-being come together.
